The Fappening

On August 31, 2014, almost 200 private pictures of various celebrities, mostly females and with many containing nudity, were posted to the image board website 4chan. The anonymous person, or people, who acquired the photos (either initially or from other parties) initially solicited bitcoins in exchange for their release. Users of other large social media websites, including Reddit, Imgur and Tumblr, soon followed suit by re-posting the private images.
